If you’ve spent a more than a minute or two on this blog, you probably know the whole thing that wellness is not just about diet and exercise- it’s a lot bigger than that (you’ve only been here a minute or two? Catch up here. We’ll wait for you to come back).
Throughout my life, I have never been very good about seeking and understanding what the heck is going on in the world, or even sometimes the nation. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized that that attitude doesn’t fly. But when you’re trying to catch up on news and politics, where do you start? I found it SO difficult and frustrating to try to find a news source that was unbiased and that didn’t leave me feeling like I was in a fog by the end of it. Enter theSkimm. Holy moly do I love these guys. Yep, I said holy moly. You subscribe to them for *free* and they send you a email every weekday morning and in about 5 minutes, you’ve gotten the rundown on the national and world news. They are snarky like me (ok they’re funnier) and they manage to adequately summarize real news while making me laugh (it didn’t matter how many times they made a reference to Chandler Bing while talking about serious stuff in Yemen. I giggled every time).
With the presidential election coming up (seriously, we’re starting with the slander ads already!?), they have also been covering many of the candidates from each party and doing a little bio on them, asking them questions about real issues, from where they stand on the controversial issues to how they take their coffee.
And because sometimes a summary of the news isn’t quite enough, they often provide links to full stories so that you can do a little more in depth reading on the subject if you want to know more. Whether you need a jumping off place on the road to being more informed, or you just need someone to explain it a little better, theSkimm is where it’s at. When I read it regularly, I feel much more like an informed and responsible citizen. Staying informed helps me feel like I’m still learning, which, because I’m a nerd, makes me happy.
If you too feel like you’re living in too much of a bubble sometimes, I encourage you to try out theSkimm. Use this link to sign up. And I know I’m sounding like a bully here, so let me just say that I’m not being paid by anybody, and nobody from theSkimm asked me to write this post. I just like it. If you decide to try it, let me know if you like it too.
What about you? How do you work on your mind fitness?
